Judge's Comments:Magdelen” is a beautiful example of the artist clearly committing to a painting that is about shadow, and the lights are all the more powerful because of it. The upper third of the painting moves in a sort of trapezoid –type shape, and supports the universally graceful l body language of a woman putting up (or taking down) her hair. The kimono sleeves are masterfully understated, yet provide the subtle colors and shapes that support the composition of this work. - Chris Saper
