Judge's Comments:Emotional impact. This is a striking painting of the human condition without being preachy. Such wondrous grays and browns, beautiful tonality. This painting is a definite winner. I was instantly drawn into the face of the subject--what well-structured features, what character, what a story this man’s eyes tell. Even though the cup is very bright and intense I did not find it distracting. I continued to find my attention drawn into the subject’s face and contemplating the social impact of the subject matter.
