Judge's Comments:This painting is so in the moment…perhaps painted in a nano second after the horses turned their heads to “pose”. Bold brushwork in a fresh painterly style makes this painting a winner. To lift a quote from Robert Henri “there are strokes which inspire a sense of vigor, direction, speed and fullness and all the varying sensations an artist may wish to express”. “Tired and Hungry” is a veritable brushstroke nirvana!! The palette appears to be limited but on further scrutiny subtle hues emerge. And that is another criteria of a great painting….that I want to look at it again and again to discover more delights. c.d. - Cathy Dietrich
